Social Activities
Do you have a hearing loss?
My goodness – maybe I do!!!
The slip into social isolation happens so easily for a number of us.
Once the job front is gone, (early retirement or invalidity retirement) and the family or other social occasions become a nightmare, we tend to alienate ourselves. We avoid “joining in”.
We in the Irish Hard of Hearing Association try our very best to organise events and outings for our members which we can take part in knowing that everyone has the same problem to a greater or lesser degree.
Over the past twenty years we have organised coffee mornings and evening meetings within our groups. This was without amplification or loops or SpeedText and people came and enjoyed themselves. A lot confided to us that while they hadn’t a clue what it was all about, they enjoyed the social chat with the cup of tea afterwards!
We have had hill walking and garden visits and musical evenings and play readings and theatre outings and lectures and quiz nights and scrabble nights and other events such as regular visits to the National Gallery of Ireland complete with neck loops.
We hope new people will come up with ideas on how to keep us in touch with each other while enjoying the outing or event. We have captions and loop systems and a whole lot of facilitation nowadays. We need to use what facilitation we have.
You can look at “What’s On” on our website to see what is coming up in the near future.
